High school football: Gouverneur seeks improvement

GOUVERNEUR — A year ago, Gouverneur made some adjustments to their lineup throughout the season looking to jump start momentum.

Unfortunately, some injuries and lack of experience contributed significantly to a 1-6 regular season campaign and 1-8 overall finish.

“It was a tough year for us. Hopefully, we can improve with each game this season as we are playing in a tough Class C Division this season,” said Gouverneur coach Sean Devlin.

The Wildcats lost 21-7 to Malone last year in the Section 10 Class B championship game.

“We’re going to be a lot better than we were last year. We have three or four good lineman, some good wide receivers and capable running backs. We just need to execute,” Devlin said.

“In the off season we had nine varsity players attend the Brian Leonard Football Camp, many of which who attended in years previous,” he added.

Four first team All NAC selections, Aaron Bush (Senior, WR-DB), Troy Gates (Senior WR-DE), Aaron McEathron (Sr TE-LB), and Adrian McShane (Jr. RB-LB), and second team selection Benjamin Casey (Sr. QB-DB) return.

“After week three, we moved Troy Gates from quarterback to wideout and Ben Casey to quarterback, and Ben did a good job. He has a few games under his belt now,” Devlin said.

Leading the line this season will be seniors Jordan Chambers and Justin Garrison and junior Mike Mandigo.

“Defensively we have a three-year starter Aaron McEathron (MLB) making the defensive calls,” Devlin said. “We also have four-year starter Troy Gates (DE), three-year starter Adrian McShane (OLB) and three-year starter Jose Flores (DB) adding to our experience. We have five other returning starters (Ben Casey, Aaron Bush, Justin Garrison, Mike Mandigo, Arden Ball) on defense, along with a handful of guys with varsity game experience.”
