WATERTOWN — City police said a man who drove his vehicle into a paratransit van on Washington Street was trying to harm himself.

Michael Podchlebnik, 53, of Syracuse, was charged by city police with first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree criminal mischief at 10:56 a.m. Monday at 830 Washington St.

He is accused of intentionally driving his 2014 Ford Fiesta into the opposite lane of travel and hitting a city-owned 2010 Ford paratransit bus being operated by Justin J. Barbarito, 34912 Holkins Road, Philadelphia, putting Mr. Barbarito’s life in danger, police said.

Mr. Podchlebnik was taken to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building, where he was processed and held for arraignment in City Court.
