GOUVERNEUR — North Country Players will celebrate its fifth year as a community theater troupe with a production of “Aida,” a musical by Elton John and Tim Rice.

“It’s a newer musical,” said Jennifer L. Haynes, vice president of the organization. “We thought we would try something a little more modern.”

The show will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Gouverneur Central High School. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens and will be available at the door or from any North Country Players member.

Since it began in 2010, North Country Players has always presented a summer musical. Past productions have included “1776,” “The Music Man” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”

The troupe also usually stages a winter holiday pops concert.

Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida,” which originally was an animated musical film, could broaden the audience for North Country Players and encourage spectators to participate in community theater, Mrs. Haynes said. The musical is based on Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, “Aida.”

North Country Players features a full orchestra of local musicians that includes active and retired teachers, other educators, former students and community members.

“It’s a real mix,” Mrs. Haynes said. “That’s pretty unique.”

The show’s conductor is Krista Easton.

“We’re excited to have a new director this year, Megan MacDonald, who is originally from Gouverneur and who works in Canton,” Mrs. Haynes said.

Mrs. Haynes and her husband, Richard R. Haynes Jr., the president of North Country Players, are music teachers. Gouverneur Central School still has a strings program, which they wanted to build upon.

“For years, we thought it would be nice to have a community theater group in Gouverneur,” Mrs. Haynes said. “We thought it would be a way to keep people involved and present opportunities for ourselves as well.”

North Country Players includes members from Gouverneur, Watertown, Canton, Potsdam, Lewis County and other parts of the region, said Julie A. Wainwright, a member of the board.

She is looking forward to this year’s musical.

“I think it’s going to be a great show,” she said. “It’ll be exciting to sit in the audience and see it.”

Among the cast are: Jennifer L. Haynes as Aida; Jennifer Freego as Amneris; Brandon Griffin as Amonasro; Joseph Schuessler as Mereb; Sylvia Nentwick as Nehebka; Stephen J. Majer as Pharaoh; Earl Kirkpatrick as Radames, and Richard R. Haynes II as Zoser.
