MASSENA - The third edition of “We Are Massena” panel is in place at the East Orvis Street Park.

This year’s presentation encompasses a variety of subjects as follows: The circumference of the panel illustrates the photographs submitted to the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce’s Winter Carnival contest earlier this year. A predominant area of the panel pictures the chamber’s ambassadors attending area businesses openings. The pictures shown are only a small portion of ribbon cuttings that the ambassadors have attended and are the most recent.

A second parcel within the panel pictures local minstrels as presented by the Masonic Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and an Alcoa Management Group, One picture in particular shows local business and civic leaders dressed in costume for a show. Of course, most minstrel shows were performed in the Town Hall Auditorium and later at the K of C Hall on East Orvis Street.

The final section renders a look at the 1971 Soap Box Derby as staged on Water Street. The derby was under the direction of the Kiwanis Club, and Chevrolet was the national sponsor. It’s interesting to note that winners were visually judged and Arthur Wescott took Polaroid pictures to capture close finishes. Note that Nick Podgurski was responsible for publicity pictures. 1971 was also the first year that a girl was allowed to enter and race that day.

Massena is historically significant because of its many varied activities and the volunteers who come forward to enrich our history. This third “We Are Massena” panel truly illustrates the variety of happenings within the area.

This panel, like all the others, will remain in place until a fourth edition replaces it next year. Any suggestions for future subject matter can be forwarded to Larry Prashaw through the Massena Chamber office.
