Dog Walk Successful

To The Editor:

The St. Lawrence Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals conducted its 12th Annual Dog Walk June 1, and the organization’s supporters, both two and four-legged, made it a successful event.

A total of $2,760 was raised that included donations from those present at the event and mail-in donations from folks who were unable to attend.

The top fundraiser this year was Joyce Schulz with $680. Joyce was a member of “Team Katherine” whose members brought in donations from throughout the state in memory of Katherine O’Keefe Shaw.

All dogs participating received a door prize, owners were offered copies of pet-related books to add to their libraries, and several participants brought in donations of $50-plus and are proudly wearing their dog walk T-shirts.

Special thanks to Officer Mark Kearns of the Ogdensburg Police Department and K-9 Kodiak for doing a special demonstration of skills that they have learned to assist with law enforcement in the Ogdensburg area.

We thank everyone who participated in the event and those who contributed but were unable to attend. We also extend our thanks to the Ogdensburg Bridge & Port Authority; all 12 walks have been held on the path at their industrial park. Thank you to Beth Lyons and the staff of The Journal and Advance-News who kept the public informed of the event.

SPECIAL NOTE: Please plan to have your cats and dogs spayed or neutered. Each year animals throughout the world, country, state, and county are euthanized because there are not enough appropriate adoptable homes for them. Many thousands are striving to survive in the wild or in situations where they face cruelty and neglect every day. We cannot adopt our way out of overpopulation, the only true “no kill” solution is to spay or neuter animals to prevent additional births.

Again, thanks to all who supported this year’s dog walk for the animals at the St. Lawrence Valley SPCA and we look forward to seeing you at our 13th event next June.
