SACKETS HARBOR Great Strides, an annual 3-mile walk to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday outside the visitors center, 301 W. Main St.
Walks serve as the foundations largest fundraiser, to help cover cost of cystic fibrosis research and drug development. The goal for Saturdays walk is to raise $19,000, according to an event website.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults nationwide. According to the foundation, in cystic fibrosis, a defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections, and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
