PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A pair of Clarkson University rowers took advantage of subpar weather conditions to finish first at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuykill River on Sunday.

Sophomore Dan Allen (Victor) and junior Aaron Dahl (Mohawk) finished first in the men’s varsity pair race in 8 minutes, 20.787 seconds, to claim the Bob Negaard Cup.

Iona College was second about four seconds back. Rollins, Jacksonville, Mercyhurst and St. Thomas also raced in the final.

“Conditions were rough, there was a strong wind into the bow,” Clarkson coach Boris Jukic said. “It was tough for everyone. I think that kind of helped them. They are good, smooth rowers and that helped them dominate the race.”

It was the second straight big win for the pair, who finished first at the New York State Collegiate Championship on May 3-4 in Whitney Point. Next up is the American Rowing Collegiate Association Championship on May 24-25 at the 1996 Summer Olympic course in Atlanta.

The duo has worked together for nearly two seasons now. Last year they made the finals of the Dad Vail Regatta, but finished fifth.

“The difference from first to last is just a couple seconds,” Jukic said. “They already belong at (finals) level. Not being a freshman and sophomore and being a year older and a little stronger and better conditioning-wise, made a difference.”

The pair qualified for the final by finishing in second place in both the heat and the semifinal races.
