MASSENA — Former Massena High School hockey coach Tim Long died at the age of 73 Sunday at his home in Massena.

Long coached at West Genesee, Massena, Norwood-Norfolk and SUNY Potsdam, but he had his greatest success with the Red Raiders, winning two state Division I championships.

In 1993 Long coached Massena to a 10-0 victory over Section 2’s Saratoga to win the state title. His second state title game in 1995 with a 6-3 win over Section 5’s Pittsford.

Massena’s title in 1993 snapped an 11-year streak without one and the Red Raiders did not win a title after 1995 until 2008.

Long was inducted into the New York State High School Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2005 and both of his state title squads are in the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
