MASSENA: Timothy M. Long, 73 of Elm Circle, passed away on May 11, 2014 at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice. Friends and family may be received on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday May 15, 2014 at 12:00 pm at Church of Sacred Heart with Rev. Kevin J. O’Brien and Rev. Donald J. Manfred presiding. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Timothy was born on January 12, 1941 in Massena the son of James and Esther (Ward) Long. He graduated from Massena Central School and SUNY at Potsdam with a Masters Degree in English. He taught English at West Genesee High School for three years and then in 1977 he began work at Norwood-Norfolk High School as an English Teacher and retired in 2000. He was a past President of the Sacred Heart Parish Council; he was a life member and prior Board Member of the Massena Country Club, Massena Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. and member of the NYS Teachers Association. Additionally Tim served as Chairperson of Section X Hockey, was a member of the Massena Recreation Commission, and a lifelong athlete in the community, playing on various High School teams, and on the Warriors semi pro football team in Massena. Tim was a dedicated coach at West Genesee, Massena Central, Norwood Norfolk High Schools, and at Potsdam State University. As a coach he led two ice hockey teams to New York State Division I championships; 1993 and again in 1995. Both teams were inducted into the Massena Central High School Hall of Fame, and the New York State Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 2005 Tim was recognized and inducted as a coach in the New York State High School Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame. On May 15, 1976 he married Deborah Tricase at Port Bryon, NY. Timothy is survived by his wife Deborah, his four children, Timothy and Lisa of Massena; Tracy and Charles Bird of New York City, NY; Jennifer A. of South Burlington, VT., Zachary M. of Syracuse, four grandchildren, Catherine, Danielle, Kelly and Cade, a brother Joseph and Diane of Aurora, NY, sisters Martha and Jeff Slack of Massena, Nora and Craig Maguire of Baldwinsville.

He was predeceased by a brother James and a sister, Judy Post. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lodge, 237 East Ave, Burlington, VT.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips Memorial Home in Massena. The Elks Lodge will be holding a prayer service at the Phillips Memorial Home, Wednesday, May 14th at 7:15 PM.
