Mary Elizabeth Berg passed away on April 30 at 9:00.
Born in Gouverneur, New York on September 21, 1926 to Lillian Adele Gleason and Donald Orin Thompson, she had a rich and full life. Mary graduated Potsdam High School in 1943, Malone Business School in 1944 and worked for the manager of the Sears, Roebuck Store in Malone, N. Y. She married William Wallace Whitman in 1945.
The couple, with their three daughters, moved to Yuma Arizona in 1961 where William worked at the Yuma Proving Ground. Mary enrolled in the newly constructed Arizona Western College earning a degree in Office Administration. She was hired by the college and worked there for the next five years. During this period she and William were divorced. She married William Berg of Yuma in 1970. In 1973 the couple moved to Elko, Nevada where her husband became the president of Northern Nevada Community College later named Great Basin College.
Mary returned to college and became a Licensed Practical Nurse working at the local hospital. When the college offered a Registered Nursing Program she enrolled and graduated with the first class in 1976. She took further training at the Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City and did hemodialysis nursing for the next four years.
Mary and William Berg retired in 1989 and purchased a home in Gold Canyon RV and Golf Resort in Gold Canyon Arizona so they could spend their winter months in a warmer climate. In 1997 they moved from Elko to Hurricane, Utah to be nearer family.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband on November 9, 2003. Surviving her are one brother Bower Thompson of Hannawa Falls, N.Y; 2 sisters Joan Reasoner of Potsdam, N.Y. and Sue Fiacco of Rensselaer, N.Y; three daughters: Donna Dufresne of Rutland Vt., Michele Hinton of Orem, Utah and Jerri Joan Smith of Cottonwood, Arizona. Two step sons: Timothy Berg of Phoenix, Arizona and Thomas Berg of Mesa, Arizona; 18 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren.
