OSWEGO — The Oswego Common Council voted Monday night to discontinue the Bridge Street Run, an end-of-school celebratory bar crawl for Oswego community members.

The ban comes on the heels of three SUNY Oswego students overdosing on heroin Friday night. One student died and two others were hospitalized, the school said in a Twitter message Saturday morning.

SUNY Oswego issued an alert Saturday saying: “Danger: Oswego heroin may be lethal.”

The college says the fatal overdose took place on campus while the other two happened elsewhere in the city of Oswego.

Two pedestrians were hit by a trolley bus during the festivities. One who was taken to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, after suffering internal injuries, Syracuse.com reported.

Shortly after the council’s decision was handed down, Oswego residents voiced mostly negative opinions toward the ban.

Alley Cat, a popular Bridge Street dance club, tweeted that “we are deeply disappointed w/today’s oswego council’s vote to ban BSR. We are already ready to appeal the city’s decision,” adding the hashtag #savebsr.

Drug-related deaths are not new to the SUNY Oswego community. Sean D. DeMerchant Jr., 22, a Clifton Park resident and student at the school, was found dead April 24 of an apparent drug overdose.

WRVO Public Media reports that the resolution to ban the Bridge Street Run was passed unanimously.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
