Mother’s Day breakfast in Madrid unites a family in tradition and heritage

MADRID — What a difference an egg makes.

The Madrid Community building was packed Sunday morning with families for the fifth annual all-you-can-eat Mother’s Day breakfast, the growing success of which comes as a pleasant surprise to its founder.

Standing behind a steam table filled with scrambled eggs, toast, pancakes, sausage and French toast, event organizer Tammy M. Hawkins watched the growing line of community members that wrapped around the building’s interior.

“There are just a lot more people, Mrs. Hawkins said. “Look at the line, and on Mother’s Day this is a win-win, since the restaurants are all full. Well, I guess we are too this morning, but normally it is a nice steady pace. Nothing usually this busy at one time.”

The event started as a way to raise money for a local park, Mrs. Hawkins said. She aims to raise an average of $700 to $900 each year. This year she hopes that the profits will go toward building a gazebo next to the Grasse River.

“Hopefully this year it will happen,” Mrs. Hawkins said. “A lot of people get married here.”

After five years, Mrs. Hawkins said she still enjoys making the breakfast and bringing together the community, including volunteers who prepare the food and help make the event happen.

Wayne D. Villnave has volunteered his services for the past four years because the community means something to him. He said he enjoys the volunteer work and seeing familiar faces.

“It’s for a good cause,” Mr. Villnave said. “Being from a small town, you know everybody, and I am just giving back. And most of these folks I know personally.”

But for one family the day is more than an annual event. It’s a tradition where they discuss what it means to be a mother.

Betty A. Beswick, 88, and her husband, Burt T., 92, were born and raised in Madrid and have attended the Mother’s Day breakfast every year with their two daughters, Marilyn R. McDermott and Bonny J. Cochran.

“It’s great,” Mrs. Beswick said. “I look forward to it all year. This has kind of gotten to be a staple and tradition. You meet all your friends and it supports our community.”

Mrs. McDermott, who now lives in Cape Cod, said she and her sister, now living in Washington state, come back to Madrid every year for a week around Mother’s Day.

“This is family time, and Bonny and I both grew up in Madrid and have been so blessed to have such a strong and stable family,” Mrs. McDermott said.

“Our parents have been a wonderful example and have been pillars in the community and we are very proud,” she said.

Mr. Beswick and his two daughters said there were no words to describe how important Mrs. Beswick is to their family.

That doesn’t mean they didn’t try.

“I didn’t realize that being a mother would be so amazing, and it is,” Mrs. Cochran said. “It is a privilege. I wouldn’t be the mother I am without my mother.”

Advice embroidered in a picture on Mrs. Beswick’s bedroom wall defines for Mrs. Cochran what her mother instilled in her and her sister.

“‘The best things you can give your children are roots and wings,’” Mrs. Cochran quoted. “We have received both of those in an amazing manner. What that means to me is that we have a heritage. Our parents established a family that has been very important to all of us. And then I am 3,000 miles from home, so my wings are a little too long. But I have my mom and dad’s blessing, and that is sweet.”

But now with her daughters grown and having children of their own, Mrs. Beswick said if there was any advice worth passing down to new mothers it is, “Love your children all you can and understand them.”
