MASSENA - Less than one year after accepting the position, Peter T. Devine will be resigning as the town of Massena’s code enforcement officer, effective Friday.

The move was confirmed by Town Supervisor Joseph D. Gray on Tuesday.

“We need to decide how to (hire a new CEO) – if we advertise, talk with neighboring towns or whatever. I haven’t talked with the board yet,” he said.

Mr. Devine was hired by the village on Aug. 20 but resigned one week into the term. He was appointed following a joint session where representatives from both boards interviewed candidates for the CEO post following the retirement of Gregory Fregoe.

The town and village had been negotiating an agreement for a joint CEO office that would have called for each side to pay 50 percent of Mr. Devine’s salary. The village opted to train its paid fire truck drivers to handle the code enforcement duties.

The soon to be former CEO had also served as the village’s housing rehabilitation program director in the past.

Attempts to reach Mr. Devine on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
