ALEXANDRIA BAY Within less than five minutes of a distress call, one person was rescued from the St. Lawrence River near the Manhattan Group of islands in Alexandria Bay on Sunday morning after a canoe capsized.
The Coast Guard had responders en route, but the person was rescued by crew members on the Island Wanderer, an Uncle Sam Boat Tours boat.
Unofficial reports indicated the person may have suffered hypothermia, but that could not immediately be confirmed. The St. Lawrence River temperature in Alexandria Bay was 39.4 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
In addition to the Coast Guard, Jefferson County rescue crews were called but, because of the speed of the rescue, their services were not required.
