The Watertown Daily Times won eight awards in the Associated Press annual state newspapers contest.

The Times won five writing awards and three photography awards in its circulation classes.

“These awards stretch across all departments in our newsroom, so it’s nice to see the entire staff recognized,” Times Editor Tim Farkas said. “In the end it means high-quality content, and our readers are the biggest winners.”

Writing awards included a first place for Times Executive Sports Editor Gregory Gay for his story on Clarkson hockey player Don Seale; third place for Daniel Flatley for his story on emergency medical services; third place for Ted Booker for his story on the impact on Route 11 businesses of the opening of Interstate 781, and third place for feature writer Chris Brock for his story on musicians at the Nautical Turtle Tavern. Night editor William Johnson won first place for his headline “Get meow-ta here!” on the high number of cats being dropped off at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals shelter in Watertown.

In the photography category, staff photographer Amanda Morrison won two awards, a first place for features for her photo “A Rapid Falling Out” and second place in photo essay for “Falling Out.” Jason Hunter won first place in portraits and personalities with his photo “Red Raider.”
