In celebration of May being American Stroke Month, the American Heart Association is asking people to learn two things that could help save their life or someone else’s: know if you’re at risk of stroke, and know stroke warning signs.

According to the association, stroke is the “No. 1 preventable cause of disability and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.” A main risk factor is high blood pressure.

Looking for signs and/or symptoms, the American Heart Association encourages people to use the FAST approach:

n F — face drooping.

n A — arm weakness.

n S — speech difficulty.

n T — time to call 911 if signs/ symptoms are seen.

For more information, visit the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, at www.strokeassociation.org.
