Several exhibits and displays will be up at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park today as it marks the 44th anniversary of Earth Day.

The zoo will hold special events and prize drawings from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission for the special day is $1 per person.

“There will be a day full of games and activities designed to educate and inspire people of all ages,” Jayn M. Graves, the zoo’s interim director, said in a statement.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation and several other local groups and agencies are teaming up to help with the event.

Visitors will have a chance to meet Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl and Louis the Otter, and receive free trees. The zoo also will hold drawings for a week at Environmental Education Camp, worth $350, and a zoo gift basket.

Other events include a children’s archaeological dig set up by the New York State Archaeological Association’s Thousand Islands Chapter, a chance to learn about aquatic insects with DEC biologists, and up close and personal visits with some zoo animals.

Can donations will be collected by Griff’s Redemption Center, and confidential document shredding will be done at the zoo’s entrance by the Development Authority of the North Country.

More information about the event can be found at NYSZOO.org.
