MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity baseball team started the 2014 NAC Central Division season by staging a dramatic finish against Franklin Academy on Wednesday.

Junior righty Jacob Vierno came on with two outs and the bases loaded and after coaxing an inning ending groundout, pitching another four full innings of scoreless of relief. Josh LaShomb then worked a scoreless sixth before senior Rory Corcoran earned the win by finishing off the outstanding relief performance by the Massena bullpen by shutting out the Huskies over the final three frames.
Our relief pitching kept us in the game but I was mostly impressed with Jacob Vierno. He came on in a very tough situation. It was his first time pitching varsity baseball and he gave us a chance to win, Paquin noted.
Corcoran finished with four strikeouts and two walks in tossing three hitless innings for the win. Vierno fanned seven batters and walked two while scattering three hits. LaShomb posted a walk and a strikeout.
