The St. Lawrence Central and Colton-Pierrepont varsity softball teams opened the Northern Athletic Conference East Division season with convincing home wins on Wednesday, while Massena dropped its Central Division debut on the road to Franklin Academy.
SLC 13, Norwood-Norfolk 2: In Brasher Falls, the Lady Larries scored eight runs in the second inning and never looked back as Lindsey Thayer fanned 12, walked two and scattered four hits for the win.
Bryanna Powell (6K, 4BB, 12H) went the distance in taking the loss.
Tera Douglas went 4-4 with three RBI and two runs scored for SLC. Thayer was 3-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Freshman Hailee Weeger went 2-4 with two runs scored in her varsity debut. Natashia Barnhard had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two others while Bailee Gauthier logged two RBI.
Sidney Molnar singled and doubled in the losing effort. Kylie LaShomb drilled an RBI-single. Gabby Cole singled and scored a run while Cortney Harvey came around to score the other.
The Lady Larries are slated to host St. Regis Falls on Friday before staging their annual tournament on Saturday.
C-P 12, Madrid-Waddington 3: In Madrid, the Lady Colts scored six runs in the fifth inning to break open a 3-1 lead as Sabrina Johnson fanned six and walked just two in a six hitter for the win. Andrea Aldous supplied a homerun while Eve Whalen went 2-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, Lauren Burns finished 2-3 with a double, Makayla Reid went 1-3, Hailee Hennessy finished 1-3 with a run scored and Kelsie Gilbert recorded a 2-3 effort.
Blake Orosz smacked a triple and a single in a 2-4 effort. Sam Dugan supplied a triple whie Desiree Pryce collected a 1-3 day with a run scored and RBI. Brittany Dawley and Sadie Newcombe each single.
Newcombe took the loss allowing five hits, nine runs, four walks in four innings. She fanned one. Dugan (3 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks) pitched in relief with one strikeout.
FA 12, Massena 0: In Malone, the Lady Huskies scored twice in the first inning, then crossed the plate six times in the third to hold a commanding 8-0 lead.
Alissa McCauley went the distance against the Lady Raiders, allowing two hits and walking four, while striking out 15. Reaghan Peets was tagged with the loss for Massena, serving up 11 hits and three free passes, striking out four FA hitters.
Janelle Heden collected three hits, including a triple, while Whitney Legacy and Brooke Collins both singled and doubled during the win.
Chelsea Streeter doubled for Massena.
