Wellesley Island State Park is the big winner in the north country as the state on Tuesday announced $90 million in grants to improve the state’s aging park system.

The Fineview park will receive $2 million to replace its deteriorating beach concession building, restrooms and picnic pavilion. An additional $850,000 will replace the park’s electrical system, drinking water system and roads in the F campground area.

Higley Flow State Park in Colton will get $850,000 to replace the swimming-beach bathhouse. The park is still recovering from ice-storm damage that made hiking and cross-country ski trails nearly impassable until volunteers cleaned up most of the debris.

Other project funding awarded to Northern New York parks is:

n Point Au Roche State Park: $350,000 to improve the Lake Champlain park’s boat dock, parking and morring area.

n Jacques Cartier State Park: $250,000 to build a recreational vehicle sewage collection station.

n Westcott Beach State Park: $250,000 to upgrade the sewage treatment system in the Plateau Campground.

n Rock Island Lighthouse State Park: $250,000 for stabilization and repairs to the park’s boat house.

n Black River Trail: $160,000 to provide the state match to a federal grant to extend the trail one mile toward Watertown.
