POTSDAM — Clarkson University has received nearly $500,000 in U.S. Department of Agriculture funds to research ways to break down organic waste for use in energy production.

The research will focus on anaerobic digesters — airtight containers with bacteria that break down waste and produce methane gas, which can be burned. The funds will help Clarkson researchers build demonstration models, which will be used to train a large number of farmers in the region.

The $499,124 is part of the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, which funds projects addressing agricultural issues of local or national concern.
