WATERTOWN — The city police officer whose handgun was accidentally fired inside the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building on Monday was completing a scheduled maintenance on the Glock .40 when it happened.

Watertown City Police Chief Gary R. Comins stated in a news release that an internal investigation was complete. The officer, whom he would not identify, faces disciplinary action, the chief said.

The single shot went off about 2 p.m. Monday in a conference room at the PSB. It caused minor damage to the building but no one was hurt, police said.

The firearm, a popular type used in law enforcement, has three pistol safeties that are deactivated when the trigger is pulled, according to the gun maker’s website, rather than a safety lever that must be engaged manually before the gun can be fired. The guns issued to Watertown police officers are standard Glocks without the manual lever, police said.
