BARNES CORNERS — A dog abandoned near the Jefferson and Lewis County line is recovering from injuries and malnutrition, while the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department is requesting help from the public to locate its owner.

A female pit bull was discovered by a hunter on Cronk Road in the town of Pinckney on Thursday evening.

Roger M. Burriss, dog control officer for 15 of the 17 Lewis County towns, said he found the animal in the same location where she was reportedly seen hours before.

He believed the dog to be severely emaciated and estimated it was missing approximately 50 percent of her fur. She also had multiple skin injuries, primarily to the front half of her body, from an unknown cause.

She was transported to Countryside Veterinary Clinic where staff named her “Madeline.”

She was examined and determined to be between the ages of 3 and 5 years. Her weight was 38 pounds. Staff estimated she should be 10 to 15 pounds heavier.

Madeline’s condition had improved enough by Tuesday to be relocated to the Lewis County Humane Society, Glenfield.

Lewis County Undersheriff James M. Monnat said police are looking for information to locate the dog’s owner. Anyone with information can call the department at 376-3511. Anonymous tips can be given through the Lewis County Sheriff’s tip line at 377-2020.
