AMHERST - The Potsdam Ice Storm scored late in the first period and midway through the second period to earn a trip to the semi-finals of the Tier II 16U girls’ national championship at 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

Kalie Grant opened the scoring at the 10:12 mark of the opening frame off a feed from Paige McCabe and then scored the eventual gamewinner with a powerplay markerin the middle period.

Grant, who leads the Ice Storm with nine goals and an assist, has played a part in 10 of Potsdam’s 11 goals in the tournament.

The Shamrocks denied Potsdam goalie Allie Compeau’s shutout bid at the 12:29 mark of the third period. Compeau finished with 25 saves. The Ice Storm goalie has a .913 saves percentage in tournament play.

The Ice Storm will be meeting a familiar foe, Marquette. The Potsdam team opened pool play with a 5-2 loss to Marquette on Wednesday.

Marquette has outscored its opponents 23-4 in its first four goals of the tournament and is led by the 16U tourney’s leading scorer. Allison Carlson enters the Potsdam game with 18 points (15g-3a) to lead the Marquette offense.
