GOUVERNEUR — Literacy of Northern New York is training volunteers to work with adults who need help with reading and writing skills. The tutor training will be held April 29, and May 1, 6, and 8 from 5:15 to 8 p.m. at the Gouverneur Library, 60 Church St.

Volunteers will learn and practice techniques to help students with reading comprehension, vocabulary development, fluency and sounding out unfamiliar words. After completing the course, each volunteer will be assigned one adult student who needs help with reading.

Literacy of Northern New York assesses each student’s reading level and provides the books and materials used during tutoring sessions. Tutors and students meet in public places, such as libraries. Registration for the course is required. There is a $25 fee for the textbook used in the course. Call Literacy of Northern New York at 782-4270 to register.
