COLLINS LANDING — Increased federal funding for Customs and Border Protection means more agents at the border crossing at Wellesley Island.

An additional $165 million for the agency in the 2014 budget allows for 2,000 more agents nationwide.

The offices of Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., and Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, confirmed an increased number of border agents, though it was not clear how many agents will be part of the expansion.

In a statement, Sen. Schumer said the change will mean increased security at the border crossing, along with expedited processing of motorists and decreased waiting times.

“More agents on the ground will increase the level of security, increase the efficiency of border crossings, and provide a shot in the arm to the local economy in the process,” according to Sen. Schumer’s statement.

Mr. Owens, in a statement, cited agency statistics showing that the greater trade volume enabled by an increase of 33 CBP officers supports as many as 1,000 jobs in the U.S.

“Increasing Canadian trade and tourism is vital to local job creation and economic development, especially along our northern border,” Mr. Owens’s statement said. “Improving these border services supports the growth of business partnerships that increase Canadian investment in our region, and provides our local businesses with greater access to the Canadian marketplace, growing jobs and local economies throughout the region.”
