CLAYTON The Town Council chose Chippewa Bay Marine Technology, Hammond, to install 48-slip galvanized steel docks at the Riverwalk.
The town accepted the companys bid of $475,000. The docks and floats will be installed this summer.
We felt by going with steel, the docks would have a longer life expectancy and maintenance would be more manageable, Supervisor Justin A. Taylor said.
He said with the freezing conditions in the winter, the steel would be the most durable material for docking spaces outside the soon-to-be-finished 1,000 Islands Harbor Hotel.
Mr. Taylor said the board made the decision Monday night at a special meeting. The council reviewed bids March 10 with the Clayton Local Development Corp. Working Group, Town Engineer Robert J. Campany, St. Lawrence Engineering, and Augusta Withington of Fourth Coast Inc.
Mr. Taylor said he sent out requests for proposals for three dock options using specific materials: aluminum frame with polyurethane floats, aluminum frame and aluminum floats, and galvanized steel frame and floats. The town received four bids.
Two bids specified aluminum frame with polyurethane floats: a $388,800 bid from Structure Marine, Quebec; and a $411,855 bid from Gator Dock, Florida. For aluminum frame and floats, the town received a $579,100 bid from Gator Dock.
Mr. Taylor said Chippewa Bay Marine Technology was the only contractor to submit plans for galvanized steel frame and floats, and ultimately made the towns decision easy.
Mr. Taylor said the company also is the most local of the bidders. Because of that, the companys staff will be readily available to make repairs if needed, and there will be reduced delivery and transportation costs. He said the board felt that making this investment now will reduce annual and long-term maintenance costs and provide a longer life expectancy.
Delivery is expected in two parts, the first in July with the gangway, main dock and dock B; and the second in August with dock C.
Mr. Taylor said the next step is to solicit contractors to complete a 300-foot wave attenuator .
