ALEXANDRIA BAY River Hospital physician Harriet Burris will retire, effective Tuesday.
Hospital spokeswoman Andrea C. Bates said the former medical director is using vacation time until then. Family medicine physician Lauren Roman has acted as medical director since October.
Dr. Burris, a 1967 graduate of Alexandria Central School, moved back to the village after having worked in an emergency department in a Connecticut hospital for two decades. According to a hospital news release, Dr. Burris began work at River Hospital on April 1, 2006.
In the past eight years, she has held titles of emergency department director, emergency department physician and, most recently, River Hospital Convenient Care physician.
Because of Dr. Burriss retirement, River Hospital Convenient Care will operate on a limited schedule. Temporary hours of operation for that service are 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
According to the hospital news release, Convenient Care is intended for patients who are unable to secure an appointment with their primary care provider, need follow-up emergency department care and for those who have an acute or minor illness not requiring an emergency department visit.
To schedule an appointment, call 482-1125.
River Hospital Chief Executive Officer Ben Moore III said he hopes to have a new provider hired by June 1, when the hospital starts to see an uptick in patients.
We have some folks now wholl be able to cover for it and well do a search very shortly, he said. Im not sure if (it will be) part-time or full-time.
A full-time physician may work in multiple departments, he said.
Meanwhile, a retirement celebration was held in honor of Dr. Burris on March 19 at Bonnie Castle Resort and Marina.
