The city of Watertown will be losing its deputy city clerk to retirement next month.

Elyse A. Frezzo will retire after serving as deputy clerk for the past 13 years and as a City Hall employee for more than 20 years. Her last day is April 29.

More than 40 people applied for the job; eight applicants were interviewed.

City Clerk Ann M. Saunders hopes to fill the position next month.

The deputy clerk is responsible for filing and issuing birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, business licenses and dog licenses; performing wedding ceremonies, and providing administrative support to the Watertown City Council.

Council members are expected to set the annual salary at the April 7 meeting.
