Philadelphia trying to lure new businesses

This letter is in regard to the column written by Perry White titled “Time for Philadelphia village taxpayers to say, ‘Whoa.’”

I had stopped reading Mr. White’s articles because he just spouts his opinions without any facts. I beg the subscribers of the Watertown Daily Times, do not hold the paper responsible for things Mr. White writes as he only writes columns, not journalism. A columnist writes from his views, not facts.

If Mr. White sat down with anyone from the village of Philadelphia board, he would realize that because of the cost to the taxpayers, the project ended. This board is trying ideas to see what can be done to build up the main street.

We want to do this to bring in new business. We know that business will not locate in a deserted downtown.

We are cleaning up the downtown and trying to create an environment where businesses will thrive and want to locate in. We will not do this without a plan to keep costs down to the taxpayers.

I think it is great that we are trying different things for our community instead of sitting on our butts doing nothing and expecting results. We have a revitalization committee made up of citizens from the community who inspire the ideas we have.

I feel bad that we don’t always have the funds to use all the ideas the committee has. The revitalization plan that was put together a few years ago by the committee is the goal of the community that we strive for. We realize that we do not have the funds to do it all now, but it gives us a map to the future of our village.

If Mr. White would have talked to us, we could have shared these goals to bring more development to our community. One drive through a part of our community does not make him a Philly Scholar.

I am so glad the people of Philadelphia are smart enough not to buy into his biased opinions. We love our community, and Philadelphia will thrive.
