BARNES CORNERS — Internal Revenue Service documents show the Barnes Corners Sno-Pals club with $713,336 in assets and income of $148,658 for the last filing year.

The club’s treasurer, Kim Hutchison, was out of town and unable to give exact data without access to the club records. She directed questions to club President Gary R. Stinson.

“Almost $500,000 of that is in tractors,” Mr. Stinson said. The balance he said, “is in buildings and land. We have a small amount of cash.”

The club’s cash is low now, he said, but at certain times of the year will be much greater, as the club is reimbursed by the state for grooming more than 100 miles of trails in Lewis and Jefferson counties.

“Our fuel bill this year is over $33,000 and we’re still grooming,” he said.

That money, he said, comes directly from the club’s account. Reimbursement is not immediate.

“Grass will be growing before we see that money,” he said.

In addition to fuel, money is also used for groomer maintenance and repairs. The club also receives funds from its members, totaling approximately 1,100 individuals, at $25 each in annual membership dues. That totals more than $27,000 per year.

Of that money, Mr. Stinson said, “five dollars goes right to NYSSA for insurance.” The remaining dues cover expenses such as postage and newsletters.

“There is absolutely no payroll,” he said. “No one makes five cents.”

Approximately 100 landowners and those who volunteer to operate the groomers receive a free membership each year.

As the club holds nonprofit-organization status, all financial records are public. Mr. Stinson said the club hires a certified public accountant to handle the club’s taxes.
