Trumped again

The only people surprised that Donald Trump won’t run for governor are those who for some reason thought he’d make a good candidate.

On Friday, Mr. Trump alerted his fan base via Twitter that he won’t seek the Republican nomination for governor this year. He previously said that if the state GOP would unify (behind him, of course), he would jump into the race.

But doggone it, party officials did not come crawling to Mr. Trump on their hands and knees begging for him to be their candidate. In fact, they allowed someone else — Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino — to start campaigning for the nomination.

So if officials don’t have the decency to discourage other candidates from jumping into the race and handing Mr. Trump the GOP nod on a silver platter, he’s not going to give this campaign any more thought. Well, we hope the New York State Republic Party is happy with itself.

But seriously, who in the world believes Mr. Trump had an ounce of sincerity in flirting with a gubernatorial run? This is a familiar pattern he has demonstrated over the years when it comes to elective office, touting how invincible his campaign would be but then announcing he’s bypassing the opportunity.

And Mr. Trump is doing the same thing this time around. Here is one of his Friday tweets on the issue: “While I won’t be running for Governor of New York State, a race I would have won, I have much bigger plans in mind — stay tuned, will happen!”

Will happen, when pigs fly. Otherwise, this is nothing but a chronic ego trip for Mr. Trump. And it’s getting pretty tiring.

If Mr. Trump has any intentions of seeking public office, he should pick a race and start campaigning. But if he’s afraid that a competitive election would show he’s not nearly as popular as he imagines he is, he should stop pretending to be mulling a run.

Doesn’t Mr. Trump get enough unwarranted attention on his reality TV show? Doesn’t he realize that he’s not fooling anyone with his political antics?
