A very successful Ogdensburg Free Academy Winter Sports season concluded on Saturday with the Boys Baskeball team losing in a superbly contested 74-67 loss to eventual New York State Class B Champion Westhill.
The contest was a one-possession affair until the final minute and the Blue Devils drew strength from a tremendous outpouring of community and region-wide support at the Glens Falls Civic.
The OFA Girls and Boys Basketball and the OFA Hockey teams also combined forces during the season for Coaches Vs Cancer Games - Donation Nights. Once again the OFA School District, the community and fans from visiting teams stepped up and raised $2,744 for a donation to the American Cancer Society in its ongoing campaign against cancer.
Recently Don Boshart, the Eastern Division Community Executive Director for the ACS, visited OFA to receive the donation. The ACS promoted the games with television commercials.
This is one of the biggest contributions from schools involved in the program in this area, said Boshart at the donation presentation.
The people at OFA do an outstanding job for the program.
On Jan. 10, the Girls Basketball Program, directed by Head Varsity Coach, Lynn Blevins, and JV Coach, Jade Vernsey, proudly hosted fundraiser games against Massena Central School. On Jan. 22 the Boys Hockey team, spearheaded by Head Varsity Coach, Jon Frederick, and Assistant Coach, Matt Morley, proudly hosted a fundraiser game against Salmon River Central School.
On Feb. 7 the Boys Basketball Program, led by Head Varsity Coach, Mark Henry, and JV Coach, Scott Sargent, proudly hosted fundraiser games against Massena Central School.
During each respective Donation Night, contributions were collected via gate receipts, proceeds from an OFA Faculty and Staff Dress Down Day, as well as other fund-raising activities.
On behalf of the Ogdensburg City School District, the OFA Interscholastic Athletic Department, the Girls Basketball, Boys Hockey, Boys Basketball Programs, I would like to take this opportunity to personally and publicly express my deepest and most heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of the people who stepped forward and played a key role during Ogdensburg Free Academys winter season Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser games – Donation Nights, said OFA Athletic Director Tony Bjork.
We would like to gratefully acknowledge all of the time, effort, and commitment displayed by Don Boshart, Community Executive Director, Eastern Division (ACS), for televising the commercials to help promote our endeavors; we respect and appreciate his dedication to the cause. We are extremely honored and grateful for Dons involvement and eagerness to lend his support and guidance to the Home of the Blue Devils.
