MASSENA - The town hall was turned into a sea of red as members of the Red Raiders hockey team attended Tuesday night’s village board meeting, where a proclamation was read in the team’s honor.

“I couldn’t have been more proud of being a part of that celebration,” Mayor James F. Hidy said.

He made the trip to Utica two weekends ago and was present when team defeated Ithaca 4-1 to claim its sixth New York State championship.

Prior to the reading of the proclamation, Coach Michael Trimboli thanked the community for their support, which included a large contingent of people from Massena traveling to Utica for the Frozen Four.

“The varsity hockey team really appreciates the community’s support,” he said.

Longtime play by play announcer Jerry Manor also spoke at the meeting thanking Mr. Hidy, the village and its residents for the impromptu welcome home celebration following their state championship win on March 9.

“I would like to thank you personally and everyone else who helped put that welcome back into Massena together,” he said. “It was wonderful.”

When the time came to read the official proclamation Mr. Hidy said that while this was an enjoyable part of the job, it wasn’t going to be easy.

“This is very tough. There aren’t a lot of mayors who get to do what I’m about to do,” he said. “There’s a lot of whereases in here, so if you could just bear with me.”

The proclamation noted the team was undefeated in Section 10 play and finished with an overall record of 19-5-1. It then mentions the team’s 2-1 win over Section V champion Fairport in the New York state Divison 1 semi-finals and 4-1 win over Section IV champion Ithaca in the state title game.

“By the way, I predicted that score,” Mr. Hidy said as he read the proclamation.

“With this victory the Massena Central High School Varsity Hockey Team was crowned New York State Division I Champions,” he said. “This tribute is representative of the skill, determination, and courage of the players and coaches. This team has brought honor and recognition to the village of Massena community with their outstanding sportsmanship and play.”

The mayor then grew emotional, nearly fighting back tears as he concluded, “Now therefore, I, James F. Hidy, mayor of the village of Massena, New York, hereby recognize Head Coach Michael Trimboli, who was presented the honor of New York State Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach Ken Hurlbut, and the members of the Massena Central 2013-2014 High School Varsity Hockey Team and encourage our community’s citizens to honor and acknowledge their accomplishments as New York State Division I Hockey Champions.”

The official proclamation was then presented to Mr. Trimboli with each of the players present receiving a copy.

Junior Evan Kassian, a forward on the team, said that while the past week and a half has been really special, members of the team knew there was potential dating all the way back to tryouts.

“It’s been great,” he said. “Right from day one in tryouts we knew this year could be special. We’re like a giant family.”

Mr. Trimboli agreed, noting that since that magical March night he’s also heard from many previous generations of the Massena hockey family.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” he said. “Every day I’m receiving congratulatory emails from former Red Raiders and former players I’ve coached in other levels of hockey.”

This year’s championship was the first for the Mr. Trimboli as high school coach and the school’s first since 2008. The school had previously won championships in 1981, 1982, 1993, 1995 and 2008.
