Timothy Ruetten, coordinator of mental health services for Jefferson County Community Services and the county’s suicide prevention coordinator, addressed the group gathered for the Thousand Islands Central Board of Education meeting prior to public forum Tuesday to discuss suicide risk factors.

He introduced training currently offered by the county, and the future addition of new programs such as the Lifelines suicide prevention intervention.

He also emphasized what he called “postvention,” or follow-up services. He said Lifelines is a whole-school program that educates administrators, faculty and staff, parents and students on the facts about suicide and individuals’ roles in suicide prevention and intervention.

Working with Jefferson County Community Services, Superintendent Frank C. House said the district hopes to bring some new anti-bullying programs that are sustainable into Thousand Islands.
