CAPE VINCENT — After 20 years working for the Thousand Islands Central School District, Cape Vincent Elementary School Principal Janet R. Young will retire July 1.

“I always found it very rewarding to work with kids, especially in the special education program,” Mrs. Young said. But she said the time is right for her to retire so she can spend more time with her family and volunteering.

Thousand Islands Central School Superintendent Frank C. House said Mrs. Young has been a great principal, a hardworking teacher and a tremendous, down-to-earth, smart lady.

Mrs. Young said she began her teaching career 32 years ago and taught in the Sackets Harbor Central and Norwood-Norfolk Central school districts before taking the job in the Thousand Islands district in 1993 as a special education teacher. She was appointed elementary school principal two years ago.

Mr. House said he tried to talk her out of retiring numerous times, but was unable to sway her decision.

Mrs. Young serves as half-time principal and half-time chairwoman of the special education department for the elementary school.

Mr. House said the district has not started searching for a replacement for Mrs. Young, but has allotted a similar salary in the budget for a replacement.

The school hopes to hire a half-time principal who might also teach the remainder of the time because of the school’s size, he said.
