ALEXANDRIA BAY — The Alexandria Town Council will consider temporary layoffs of three Alexandria Municipal Arena workers at its meeting tonight.

If such a change is made, town Supervisor Dale D. Hunneyman said, the town could save about $15,000 to $17,000 with the temporary cuts of two full-time and one part-time worker for about 90 days when the ice arena is not in full use.

“The way the economy is, we have to look at ways to save every dollar we can in this township,” Mr. Hunneyman said.

A part-time employee, whose wages are paid through a county work program, would stay employed regardless of any changes in the status of the other workers, he said.

He said the council looked into shifting the three workers into other departments for the summer, where they would do work such as mowing lawns at its cemeteries, but it found that change would negate any potential savings for the town.

“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see the savings of bidding out the work instead of using our own people,” Mr. Hunneyman said.

As a part of the proposed change, the town also will consider changing the operating dates for the arena, including a closing time of June 1, about two weeks after its last spring hockey game May 16.

The town additionally will discuss delaying the opening day in the fall to save more money.

During the meeting, the council also will hold a public hearing about overriding the state-imposed 2 percent tax levy increase cap.

The council meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the town office, County Route 1.
