POTSDAM - SUNY Potsdam’s Department of Geology will offer free seismology workshops for the community this semester.

All are welcome to learn about what causes earthquakes and tsunamis, seismograph detection and more, from Professor Emeritus Dr. Frank Revetta.

All sessions will be offered at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays in Timerman Hall Room B23. The workshops are free, and the public is invited to attend.

The schedule is as follows:

■ Tuesday: “How Earthquakes are Detected,” explaining the use of seismograms in the lab.

■ March 18: “Worldwide Earthquake Occurrence,” discussing plate tectonics and programs to study earthquake distribution.

■ April 1: “Seismogram Interpretation,” examining distant earthquakes including seismograms from Loma Prieta, Northridge, Japan and Alaska.

■ April 15: “How Tsunamis Form,” including information on recent tsunamis in Japan and Indonesia.

Each seismology workshop lasts about 50 minutes. Guests of all ages are welcome to attend.
