OGDENSBURG — Within the next month, 54 trees will be cut down along Paterson Street as the city moves forward with a long-planned overhaul of the road.

The federally funded, $7.5 million project will see the road widened by roughly two feet and resurfaced. Additional work will include sidewalks and storm drains. Construction will begin this spring.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, a contract with Black River Tree Removal LLC was unanimously approved to cut down the trees along the street, which is the first step in the project.

The $10,500 contract requires the job be completed by March 31, City Manager John M. Pinkerton said.

Mr. Pinkerton said the project has to be completed within the month so construction won’t harm the nesting habitat of the Northern Long-Eared Bat.

Bats will be returning to city trees in summer, and Mr. Pinkerton said they want the trees removed before any bats come to roost.

Once the project is complete, smaller trees will be replanted that won’t reach up to interfere with telephone cables, Mr. Pinkerton said.

“In the long run it will be better for our utilities,” he said.

The trees in question have been marked with spray-painted Xs and Mr. Pinkerton said homeowners will be reminded in advance of the project that the trees in front of their homes will be taken down.
