LOWVILLE — The Lewis County Historical Society in a couple of weeks will host a free event to showcase youth organizations in the area.

“It will be pretty informal, just a chance to find out more,” said Marian M. Opela, president of the society’s board of directors.

The program, entitled “Calling All Youth,” will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at the society’s headquarters at 7552 S. State St.

It is slated to feature exhibits and presentations from Lewis County chapters of several youth-centered organizations, including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H and FFA.

Representatives from those organizations will also be on-hand to discuss their programs one-on-one.

“Parents and children are encouraged to attend this free event to see what these youth organizations have to offer,” states a society release.

Society board member Charlotte M. Beagle initially floated the idea of hosting an event to commemorate the Girl Scouts, and other youth organizations were added as plans developed, Mrs. Opela said.

“It kind of expanded and grew from there,” she said.

Along with information on current activities and services, organizers are hoping to have some historical displays — like old uniforms or other memorabilia — from the different groups, as well, Mrs. Opela said.

The event fits in with the society’s mission of “promoting the past and present cultural, ethnic, religious, educational and industrial history of Lewis County,” she said.
