Inadequate Snirt insurance sends organizers searching for new policy

BARNES CORNERS — A Tuesday morning conference call has confirmed the insurance policy held by Barnes Corners Sno-Pals snowmobile club for its annual Snirt Run fundraiser does not cover all-terrain vehicles or the county roads opened for the event.

Gary R. Stinson, club president and Snirt Run organizer, is now on a search to find adequate insurance for the poker run, scheduled for April 12.

The call with Mr. Stinson, Jim Rolf, New York State Snowmobile Association trails coordinator, and insurance agent Anthony “Butch” Franklin, Franklin-Case Agency LLC, was arranged after confusion concerning the matter arose when Lewis County officials, in an effort to improve safety and lessen damage at the annual event, asked for proof of insurance, as well as better maps, signs and barriers, before the county will declare the roads open for ATV use for the event.

“We’re going to get special event coverage,” Mr. Stinson said. “Butch has got to do some homework on it, but he guaranteed he could find us the coverage.”

Currently, rates are being calculated for the coverage, according to Mr. Stinson, who said he was not given any idea of the cost of the new policy.

Mr. Stinson said he is hoping the event’s 10-year history, with few reported accidents or injuries, will be considered.

Mr. Rolf said the new policy is intended to cover all affected municipalities, as well as the state association, landowners and all participants.

Mr. Franklin did not respond to requests for comment.
