Local college athletics: Clarkson’s Coleman earns Liberty League honor

Clarkson’s John Coleman has been selected as Liberty League performer of the week in men’s basketball.

The junior averaged 26.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game, leading the Golden Knights to a trio of victories last week. In a 77-75 overtime win against Vassar, Coleman set school records for most field goals in a season (219) and in a career (546), leading the Golden Knights team back to the Liberty League tournament for the first time since 2008-09.

Also in men’s basketball, St. Lawrence freshman Kyle Edwards was honored as the league rookie of the week. Clarkson’s Alyssia Marshall was selected as conference rookie of the week in women’s basketball.

n In indoor track and field, SLU’s Spencer Patterson was honored as the league’s men’s track performer of the week. He placed third in the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 57 seconds at RIT Invitational. His time is second among Liberty League runners this season.

SLU’s Amy Cymerman garnered the conference’s women’s track performer of the week honors, after winning the mile in an ECAC qualifying-time of 5:03.10 at RIT. Teammate Divya Biswal was selected as women’s track performer of the week. The junior finished third at RIT in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying and season-best jump of 5.36 meters as well as a second-place finish in the triple jump and a third in the 60 meters. Teammate Lisa Grohn was chosen as rookie of the week, taking second place in the 800 run at RIT in an ECAC qualifying-time of 2:21.74.

n With six points last week, Jordan Ott of SUNY Potsdam was selected as ECAC West women’s hockey rookie of the week for the eighth time this season. The freshman leads the Bears in scoring.
