Carthage hospital foundation accepting scholarship applications

CARTHAGE — The Carthage Area Hospital Foundation wants to see local students excel in post-secondary education, in hopes of possibly returning to work at the hospital.

That is why the foundation again is offering scholarships to seniors at Beaver River, Carthage and Harrisville central schools, and to any hospital employee’s children, who plan to pursue a career in health care.

“Hopefully they’ll come back to their hometown,” said JoAnn L. Zando, foundation development manager.

That, however, is not a requirement for the scholarship.

According to a recent foundation news release, scholarship criteria include a high school senior’s interest in a health career, his or her academic and scholastic record, leadership skills, community involvement and communication skills.

Applicants also must plan to attend full-time a two- or four-year accredited college or university or be enrolled in a health-related program at a Board of Cooperative Educational Services.

Mrs. Zando said that when the foundation took over the scholarship from the hospital in 1995, the award changed from one recipient who received $1,000 per year for four years to a few $1,000 scholarships per year.

Applications can be picked up at the guidance office at each of the three participating school districts, or at the foundation office, 3 Bridge St.

The applications must be handed in by April 25, and winners will be announced in mid-May.

For more information, call Mrs. Zando at 493-0114.
