CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators is expected to appoint a highway superintendent today.

“The search committee has come up with someone they think is the right person,” County Administrator Karen M. St. Hilaire said.

A resolution on the appointment does not list a name or salary, which will be discussed in executive session before the board votes, she said.

“I know what name we’re going to recommend,” said Legislator Donald A. Peck, D-Gouverneur, chairman of the Highway Committee.

Neither Ms. St. Hilaire nor Mr. Peck would identify the finalist for the job.

If a highway superintendent is appointed today, he could start in about a month, Mr. Peck said.

The search committee interviewed five of the 19 applicants for the job, he said.

The county looked at combining the job of Governmental Services Director Michael J. Cunningham with that of a highway superintendent before starting the search, but decided not to move in that direction.

“It’s not going to happen,” Mr. Peck said. “The way we’re set up, it’s just not going to work.”

Committee members looked at counties that have joint departments.

“In those counties, highway takes over buildings and grounds, not vice versa,” Mr. Peck said. “We opted out of that as a solution.”

The county has been without a permanent highway superintendent since Toby W. Bogart left in November to take a job with the New York Power Authority. The board agreed in October to contract for $10,000 per month with Dashnaw’s Town Budget Services for management consulting of the department during the search. William E. Dashnaw was highway superintendent before Mr. Bogart was appointed in 2011.
