PRINCETON, N.J. — A quick start ultimately paid off for the St. Lawrence University hockey team Friday night.

Patrick Doherty scored the game’s first two goals, and defenseman Gavin Bayreuther registered four assists as the Saints fired a season-high 50 shots on goal en route to recording a 7-1 rout of Princeton in an ECAC Hockey game at Hobey Baker Rink.

“We played a very complete game,” St. Lawrence coach Greg Carvel said. “We played the way we wanted to play. ... We played very well with the puck and it showed with 50 shots on net.”

Justin Baker registered his second consecutive three-point night with a goal and two assists for St. Lawrence (10-14-3 overall, 4-8-3 conference), which has won two of its past three games after managing only one point in its previous 10 games heading into last weekend.

Matt Weninger made 24 saves to record the win for the Saints, who allowed only eight shots on goal in each of the last two periods.

“Matt wasn’t tested much tonight, but when he was he came up with some big saves,” Carvel said.

Woody Hudson, Gunnar Hughes and Brian Ward each tallied a goal and an assist, and Matt Carey scored a power-play goal for ninth-place St. Lawrence, which generated its largest offensive output since an 8-5 win at Dartmouth on Nov. 9.

Colton Phinney stopped 43 of 50 shots faced for last-place Princeton (4-18, 3-12).

The Saints have won five consecutive games at Princeton and are 6-0-1 in their past seven games against the Tigers.

St. Lawrence converted on two of six power-play chances, while allowing a man-advantage goal from three opportunities.

The Saints led 1-0 on Doherty’s power-play goal as he tipped in a Bayreuther drive 5:38 into the game. He followed with his goal at 8:55 of the middle period when he finished off a pass from Bayreuther.

“We needed him to get going,” Carvel said of Doherty. “He scored two, but five other players also scored, so our offense was spread out. Every line played well and every line created scoring chances.”

Just 1:01 later, Princeton drew within 2-1 on Ryan Siiro’s power-play goal, but Baker responded with a goal by one-timing a feed from Hudson past Phinney at the 12-minute mark. Then Matt Carey scored on the power-play at 15:35 for a 4-1 St. Lawrence advantage.

“They controlled the puck all night long,” Carvel said of Baker and Bayreuther.

Hughes then scored 1:19 into the third period by redirecting a pass from Doherty and in goal and the rout was on for the Saints.

Hudson scored on a deflection of a Bayreuther drive at 6:31 for a 6-1 lead and Brian Ward later cashed in on his own rebound to complete the scoring at 16:12.

St. Lawrence also picked up ground in the chase for playoff positioning in the conference as it moved within two points of both Brown and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, who both lost on Friday to remain tied for eighth place.

The Saints will play at No. 3 Quinnipiac at 7 tonight.

“They scored six goals on Clarkson and Clarkson is a very good defensive team,” Carvel said of Quinnipiac. “They’re a very complete team, so we’ll have our work cut out for us.”

nNOTES: St. Lawrence, which improved to 6-6-3 on the road, lost freshman defenseman Mike Graham to injury in the second period ... Carey, who is tied for national lead among first-year players in goals, scored his team-leading 16th goal ... Older brother Greg Carey was held without a point for the second straight game. ... Baker, now has two goals and four assists over his last two games, and Bayreuther are now tied for second place in the country among defensemen in points (26) and points per game (0.96).
