North country commuters should expect near-whiteout conditions today as a lake-effect snow storm rages on, according to the National Weather Service.

Interstate 81 between LaFargeville and Adams will be “greatly impacted” by the latest storm and the weather service is cautioning travelers of “very difficult” driving conditions due to blowing snow and snow covered roads. A lake-effect snow warning remains in effect for Jefferson and Lewis counties until 1 a.m. Saturday with an additional 5 to 11 inches of snow in the forecast for today and another 1 to 3 inches expected overnight tonight.

Forecasters expect the band of heavy lake-effect snow to slowly shift southward towards northern Oswego and eastward towards Croghan today.
