Morristown delays Town Hall upgrades to talk with Catholic Church about parish center

MORRISTOWN - The Morristown Town Council has tabled a proposal to upgrade light fixtures at the Town Hall as they continue conversations with St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church about the possible purchase of the parish center.

The church is considering selling the building as it looks at acquiring the vacant United Methodist Church building, which is located closer than the parish center.

A study conducted in December by Smart Watt Energy, Syracuse, showed that the town could save close to $700 a year by switching to more energy efficient light-emitting diode, or LED, bulbs.

Town Clerk David J. Murray said the installation would cost roughly $1,500.

Currently the town pays roughly $250 per month to light the Town Hall.

Mr. Murray said the upgrade would be especially helpful as some of the fixtures are so old that soon it will be difficult to find bulbs that will fit.

Town Councilor W. Howard Warren suggested tabling the proposal at Tuesday’s meeting, citing the ongoing discussions with the church.

There was no discussion of when they may take a second look at the upgrades.

The parish center, located at 500 Morris St., has been considered since January as a possible replacement for the current Town Hall.

Town Supervisor Frank L. Putman said at the January town council meeting that the church had initially floated a $200,000 price tag for the building.
