Thousands of miles from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., several deployed 10th Mountain Division soldiers from Fort Drum will eagerly watch the Super Bowl from eastern Afghanistan.

For one group from the 3rd Squadron 71st Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, it is a chance to see their Seattle Seahawks win it all against the Denver Broncos.

1st Lt. Jordan B. Hinkle, a Spokane, Wash. native, said he had been watching the team play for years. He added that he went to his first game in person with his granddad when he was 7 years old.

“I’ve been a Seahawks fan my whole life,” he said.

1st Lt. Kenneth D. McNaughton said he had been a fan for most of his life as well. Lt. McNaughton’s work in Afghanistan has him a long way from his home in Colfax, Wash., where he last watched the Seahawks play for the title in 2006, when they fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Waynesville, Mo. native 1st Lt. Anthony S. Gonzalez said he has been a Seahawks fan since college, when his friends got him to watch a game with them.

“I’ve been a Seahawks fan ever since that game,” he said.

About 2,000 soldiers from the brigade started their nine-month deployment late last year, serving as advisors to Afghan military and police forces.

Soldiers watching the game may have to wake up early. Kickoff time in eastern Afghanistan is about 4 a.m. Monday.
