MASSENA — Massena Memorial Hospital will have a new general practice physician opening a practice early next month and is in the process of adding another obstetrician/gynecologist to its staff.

Tina R. Corcoran, the hospital’s senior director of public relations/planning/physician recruiting, said Dr. Ammar Kafa will start work on Feb. 3 out of the new medical office building on Maple Street across from Massena Memorial.

“He has 10 years of experience. He sees everyone from infants through people in their Golden Years. He has been working in Wisconsin,” she said.

Ms. Corcoran said there is a demand in Massena for more primary care physicians. Some practices are no longer accepting new patients.

“A lot of our primary care physicians’ practices are full. We get calls weekly from people looking for a primary care physician. We have people waiting for Dr. Kafa to start,” she said.

The hospital spokesperson said a second full-time physician assistant has joined the Louisville clinic staff, and efforts are underway to bring more internal medicine/infectious disease physicians to Massena.

“We have another internist going through the credentialing process now and hopefully they will be starting in April or May. We’re also close to having two internists signing on to start this summer,” she said.

“Primary care is a hard recruit. We’re very happy with the success we have had in the last couple of months,” the hospital spokesperson added.

Ms. Corcoran said the hospital has also opened the North Country Women’s Health clinic in recent weeks.

“It’s a new practice we have opened in the wake of Dr. (Taesik) Choi’s retirement. Dr. Choi was here for almost 40 years. He delivered generations of babies in Massena,” she noted.

Dr. Choi closed his practice at the end of December. Dr. P.T. Nguyen and certified nurse midwife Heather Hogan, who both formerly worked at Dr. Choi’s Massena OB/GYN practice, have joined the staff at the new women’s health clinic.

“We’re also recruiting another physician for that practice. We have a doctor who has committed to us and is currently in the credentialing process,” Ms. Corcoran said.
