The race for the Section 10 girls hockey regular season title will come down to Friday night after Massena Central blanked St. Lawrence Central and Potsdam Central battled Potsdam Central to a scoreless overtime draw in a pair of league matchups staged on Wednesday.
With the win, Massena improved to 6-1 atop the league standings and will play host to Canton, which moved to 5-1-1, on Friday at 5 p.m. the Massena Arena.
The Lady Raiders can claim sole possession of the league banner with a win or tie while the Lady Bears need a win. In wrapping up their sectional season with the tie, the Lady Sandstoners slipped to 5-2-1 and fell out of contention for the regular season crown. They finish their regular season this evening on the road against Lake Placid in a non-league game slated to start at 7 p.m. at the 1932 rink.
Potsdam 0, Canton 0 (OT): At the Canton Pavilion, neither team was able to break the scoring ice despite generating more than 70 combined shots on goal.
It was a well-played high school girls hockey game. There was a lot of action, noted Potsdam coach Joe Stark. Both teams had their chances but both goaltenders played very well.
Potsdams Sidney Molnar turned aside the 25 shots she faced to earn the shutout and Elizabeth Burke stood even taller making 36 saves for the Golden Bears (11-4-1).
Despite the outcome of their final regular season games, both Canton and Potsdam will be headed to the Section 10 playoffs which get underway with a pair of semi-final round game next Wednesday at the home of the higher seed. Championship game is slated for Saturday, February 1, at the home of the highest remaining season.
Massena 5, SLC 0: At the Tri-Town Arena, the Lady Raiders got goals from Bailey Dillabough at 1:26 and Shannon Casey at 4:18 of the first period and got a 16-save performance from Maddi Dillabough to earn the shutout win over the Lady Larries.
Dillabough finished with two goals. Raechel Davis (1 assist) and Katie MacCuaig struck for the other goals.
